The latter is not a classic transport subject, however, since accessibility of users to facilities is typically a main concern, links to transport planning are quite significant. In general, all these subjects are dealt with using quantitative approaches, especially optimisation and simulation techniques.
The focus for intercity transport analysis and planning research has initially been placed on land modes, and especially on the impacts of road infrastructure on regional development and on the design of road network plans under multiple objectives. Lately, air transport has become a major research area for the group, both at the strategic and at the operational planning (flight scheduling and fleet assignment). Another subject of recent research has been high-speed rail planning and (preliminary) design.
Research in urban transport analysis and planning has been concerned with land-use transport systems, transit systems organization, integrated transit-parking planning, traffic data collection using cell phone network data, and innovative urban transport modes. In relation to the latter subject, mobility solutions such as carpooling, car- and bike-sharing, and electric vehicles are being thoroughly investigated.
The focus for transport-environment-health interactions research is the integrated modelling of road transport, pollutant emissions and population exposure in urban areas. The ultimate objective is to develop an analytical framework for studying those interactions in a detailed manner taking into account the complex spatial and temporal variations in vehicle exhaust.
Research on public facility planning has been directed in the recent past to hierarchical and integrated facility network planning under accessibility maximization objectives. Work carried out in regards to integrated facility network planning explicitly considers two types of actions to improve accessibility to facilities – upgrade the services offered in some population centres and upgrade some links of the transport network – thus being closely connected to the research done in the group with respect to road network design.
