Líneas de trabajo: Linhas temáticas de investigação e respetivos coordenadores: 1)Applied Organic Chemistry Synthesis and characterization of new photochromic organic molecules for use in optical devices and textiles. Development of new dyes to act as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy of cancer, ligands for affinity chromatography of proteins, fluorescent NIR probes for biomolecules and to be used in dye-sensitized solar cells. Synthesis of new calixarene-based architectures for molecular recognition, catalysis, electronic and optoelectronic devices and sensory applications. 2)Materials Chemistry Synthesis and characterization of new oxide materials (bulk ceramic and thin films) for the technologic development of electronic devices and renewable energy. Synthesis of structured nanomaterials, characterisation and application as catalysts for CO, NOx or VOC’s oxidation reactions. Applications of novel graphene- and C dots-based carbon nanostructures in fuel cells and energy storage. Synthesis of novel (nano)catalysts containing a metal element alloyed to a non-metal element for application in fuel cells. Synthesis of novel multifunctional hierarchically structured ordered (non-doped and doped) organic/inorganic nanohybrids exhibiting complex behaviour and tuneable properties for application in optical devices and sensors. Bio-inspired biomineralization of scaffolds with calcium carbonate for bone regeneration and drug delivery. Green nanohybrid electrolytes for electrochromic devices using amorphous biopolymer/siloxane electrolytes doped with salts, acids and/or ILs. 3) Environmental Chemistry - Innovative AOP (heterogeneous Fenton and TiO2-mediated photocatalytic oxidation) to reduce the contamination level present in problematic wastewaters, like winery wastewaters, olive mill wastewaters and textile wastewaters. - Development of low cost biosorbents for removal of heavy metals, endocrine disruptors compounds, pharmaceutical active ingredients and pesticides from water. - Development of new solid biofuels with high calorific value, produced as pellets or bricks, from olive oil wastes with other industrial and agro-industrial wastes, and improve the BioCombus technology to allow consolidation and replication in similar or new situations. - Perform new studies on soil organic and inorganic phosphorus dynamics using a sequential fractionation method under field conditions. Study and evaluation of environmental risks derived from the use of phosphate fertilizers and from animal manure addition - Understand the vulnerability of aquifer systems to contamination and the impacts of pollution on natural hydrochemical processes. 4) Food Chemistry & Biochemistry Chemical and biochemical characterization of food bioactive compounds and changes during production and processing for an healthier diet Development of innovative technologies for food processing including functional foods Development of analytical methods for food safety and quality control Valorization of agro-food industry by-products Evaluation of how bioactive compounds and functional foods modulate the age- related phenotype and associated diseases
