GI-3 Sociedade, Território, Recursos e Políticas Departamento: Centro de Estudos Transdisciplinares para o Desenvolvimento Universidad: Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) Investigador principal: Tim Koehnen - Teléfono: 00 351 258 776778 Investigadores del grupo: - Vasco Rebelo - Timothy Koehnen - Susete Costa - Susana Fonseca - Sofia Gouveia - Shawn Parkhurst - Sara Simões - Pedro Ferrão - Pedro Silva - Miguel Pires - Mário Sérgio Teixeira - Maria Teresa Sequeira e Sousa Carvalho - Maria Silva - Maria Araújo - Manuel Tibério - Lu Líneas de trabajo: In its current and future work, RG3 will continue to focus on rural and semi-rural territories with low population density that suffer from a series of specific, persistent and mutually reinforcing socioeconomic and environmental problems, both structural and policy-induced in nature, among which the following are perhaps the most intractable:
a) resource scarcity;
b) low value-added retention and poor profitability in agrifood value chains;
c) the absence of market competitiveness;
d) poorly-integrated, and disorganized supply with little quality control;
e) limited attention to food security or food self-sufficiency needs;
f) weak economic performance;
g) socio-economic exclusion associated with demographic imbalances, migration
and unemployment;
h) landscape degradation and scarce ecosystem services.
In line with its aim to assist in analysing how rural areas’ competitiveness might be promoted via the sustainable use of multiple resources, the group will continue to identify the best ways of realizing the full potential of a territory’s resources by addressing the following 5 specific questions:
1) what local resource-based goods/services are demanded by whom (local
population, tourists, society in general)?
2) What are the most effective policies, means and mechanisms to stimulate their supply in the context of regional and local development initiatives?
3) What are the attitudes, preferences and motivations/demotivations that underpin different groups’ demand for such items?
4) How can the institutional preconditions essential for regional and
local development be fulfilled and/or strengthened? and
5) What are the effects/impacts of macroeconomic and international trade reforms on development, and on the emergence/evolution of key problems on RPTs?
The RG made strenuous attempts to “bring the community into contact with itself”. The RG transferred knowledge to stakeholders via participatory meetings focusing on policy making, active citizenship, community and local business initiatives and the definition of new research agendas. Research results were extensively used into teaching activities and disseminated to the research community through participation in (inter)national meetings and publications, thereby demonstrating the RG’s contribution to the state of the art in different aspects of territorial development.
